Sports Psychology: Hearing or Listening

The difference between winning and losing; the difference between teaching and learning; the difference between a good practice and a bad practice; the difference between good execution and bad execution; Is in the quality of communication. Often failure is the result of the players hearing, but not really listening. For some players the message goes in one ear and right out the other ear.  Winning teams are actively listening. To listen, you need to bring your body and mind to training. You have to stand up straight or sit up straight. Make eye contact with the coach. Nod your head in agreement, when you understand the instruction. Ask the coach questions. Coaches need to set up the ideal situation for players to listen and learn. Coaches should ask players questions; make sure they are listening; ask players to repeat what was said. Coaches should have players stand up in front of the group and explain the system; make players draw a drill or a play on the board. Coaches that, make sure their players are listening - will have success. Coaches who do not insure players are listening - will lose.

This photo, is practice of Turkey, preparing for the Continental Cup. The players could not execute the drill the coach outlining on the board. It's said that a picture is worth a thousand words. What does this picture tell us? This picture tells us, that the players were not listening to the coach. From this photo, you could predict that Turkey would not be successful.

''Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,'' - Proverbs 1:5

''Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.''               - Proverbs 1:8-9

Sports Psychology:  Increase Your Energy and Create Better Results - Refuse to Put Out Other People's Fires

We need to let people solve their own problems. If we go around putting out other people's fires; It steals our energy and destroys forward momentum. When we make people pull their own load, both the individual and team will grow

Galatians 6:5 for each one should carry his own load.

Joe Thornton - Know When To Pass Soft

Elements of a Great Passing Team:

Players with their stick on the ice have a better chance to both pass and receive a pass. If both players are talking; it increase the chances of making a good pass. When players make eye contact; the odds of  making a successful pass increase dramatically. When your're moving your legs; you can received a good pass or chase down a bad pass.
  • 2 sticks on ice
  • 2 mouths
  • 4 eyes
  • 4 legs

Terms:
  • Good vision, leads to good decisions

Practice Rules:
  • There only one puck in a game
  • Play the puck that is passed to you

Coaching Tips: Discipline

The Hudson Valley Eagles Championship team 2004-05 had some great leaders that would always help keep players self-disciplined. Quality player leadership is essential for team discipline

"If player falls away from discipline, you should find away to gently bring them back! Do not be afraid to use quality players to help you at this task."
-Keith McAdams

Sports Psychology: Always Plan Your Comeback

Never leave a loss without setting a new goal. Review the tapes, learn from the past; create new plans; shake of the loss and get back to work quickly. ORACLE TEAM USA’s victory marks one of the greatest comebacks in the history of sport. Oracle made a small adjustments in both strategy and tactics to win the America’s Cup. Team Oracle would not say what strategic change was made to the boat; tactical changes followed with personnel to implement the execution of the new strategy.

Vancouver Canucks Frontal Cross

Key Points:

1.  Do not start cross before puck carrier enters zone.

  • Starting the cross early leads to off sides
2.  One player per lane.
  • This makes it harder for the defenders to read the play.
3.  Proper spacing forces the defenders to choose a man.

Three Essential Playing Rules for Good Defensive Tactics:

Sports Psychology Tips:

The Power Of Your Inner Dialogue:

This story was first told by Joel Osteen Ministries.
I changes parts of the story to relate to Sports Psychology.

During the 1999, Jose Lima was the star pitcher for the Houston Astros.  His record was  21-10, 3.58 ERA, 3 complete games, 246 innings pitched.
During that year Lima was one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.

But then the  Astros moved from the Astrodome to their new ballpark. The fence in left field was much closer than the fence in the Astrodome. It favored the hitters and made it more difficult on the pitchers.

The first time Jose Lima visited the new ballpark, he looked at the fence, and said, " I’ll never be able to pitch in here. The fence is way too close.”

The next season, he went from being a 21-game winner to a 16-game loser. His record was  7-16,  6.65 ERA,  O complete games, 196 innings pitched.

What went wrong?

The Law of Expectations tells us that whatever one expects, with confidence, becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.  What we believe will happen, those beliefs can be positive or negative.

This negative inner dialogue not only affects the way we feel but the way we playAll our performances are influenced by our thoughts. If our thoughts are positive, we will play better and
have more positive energy.
