There is no set formula in coaching; there is no cookie cutter approach or style. Right now there is a push in USA Hockey for this one size fit all approach to coaching. What we've used successful yesterday at practice; may not work today. The key to being a successful coach is to use the approach which is effective in the moment. The truth is, our coaching methods only work - if it works for the individual player. One method of coaching is not effective; the best methods, reach the individual players learning and motivation styles. This requires a coach changing their style and method of teaching.
Coaching is a tough business. For me winning in short term is top priority. I believing nothing motivates a team more than winning. But winning short term does not mean I can't have long term plans. Coaches need to coach from both ends of the spectrum to achieve optimal results. There is no one way to create success.
Small Area - Large Area
Short Term - Long Term
Certain - Uncertainty
Offense - Defense
Soft - Hard
Structured - Unstructured
Positive - Negative
Simplicity - Complexity - There a place for complex drills that make the players think.
Sports Psychology Tips: Turning the Page
When you lose, don't stay down - get up quickly. When you suffer a loss; simply turn the page and move on. Don’t let discouragement or loss steal your faith or work ethic. Whenever adversity comes, it will be your faith and work ethic that bring you back to success. Take a lesson from Bill Belichick playbook. Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots wasted no time getting back to work on the new season. One week after the loss the entire staff is working again. "We have to turn the page and move on," said Bill Belichick. "We're going to take an opportunity, as we always do, to sit back, go through everything, take a look at the big picture, take a look at each individual situation — players, coaches, schemes, adjustments, training, you name it — and do anything we can to improve our football team going forward."
Forget those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.”

“Behold, I am making all things new.” -Revelation 21:5
