Question: Creating Practice Plan

Question

You coached me at Bryan Trottier Hockey Camp about 20 years ago.  I am a first year head coach in High School Hockey. I am having problems organizing my practice plan. I tend not to get everything done I schedule.  Do you have some ideas you can share on creating a practice plan?

Answer

Here are some guidelines you can use for creating a practice plan:
  1. How many practices do you have per week?
  2. How much time do you have?
  3. How many players are on your team?
  4. What do you want to teach them?
  5. How many repetitions is each player getting?
  6. Do you have a yearly, monthly and weekly plan?

Tips:

1. Focus on fundamental - The best skilled teams usually win.
2. Practice the things that happen all the time.
3. Practice thing that happen a lot.
4. Write out your plan.
5. Prioritize what is most important.
5. Rewrite your plan and delete items.

“Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.”

Things That Happen All the Time:
  • Possession of puck
  • Fighting for possession
  • Transition Offense to defense
  • Transition Defense to offense
  • Loose pucks
  • Shots, Rebounding and Saves

My former junior coach from Long Island Norm Ryder once told me, "the best way to be successful is to get off the bus with the best players."

I am a first year head coach with U12 house league. What advice do you have for being ready for first practice?

Answer

Have a meeting with parents and share your expectations for the season. Go over safety issues with players. Keep things simple. Have a plan for each practice. Make sure the players are having fun. The most important thing for young players is to keep them moving. Make sure you have all the right equipment; whistle  coaching board, pucks and cones.

Once A Training Day is Lost; It Lost For Ever

Keith McAdams Coaching Tips: Sports Psychology Tips

"Continuous effort -- not strength or intelligence -- is the key to unlocking our potential."
-Liane Cardes

"If you train hard, you'll not only be hard, you'll be hard to beat."
-Herschel Walker

"I always believe in going hard at everything, whether it is Latin or mathematics, boxing or football, but at the same time I want to keep the sense of proportion. It is never worth while to absolutely exhaust one's self or to take big chances unless for an adequate object. I want you to keep in training the faculties which would make you, if the need arose, able to put your last ounce of pluck and strength into a contest. But I do not want you to squander these qualities."
-Theodore Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt’s Letters to His Children (1919)

"The most challenging aspect of the decathlon is not the events themselves, but how you train to become the best 100-meter runner you are on the same day that you're the best 1,500-meter runner."
-Bruce Jenner

"There are no short cuts to any place worth going."
-Beverly Sills

"The more I train, the more I realize I have more speed in me."

-Leroy Burrell

Sports Psychology:  Increase Your Energy and Create Better Results - Refuse to Put Out Other People's Fires

We need to let people solve their own problems. If we go around putting out other people's fires; It steals our energy and destroys forward momentum. When we make people pull their own load, both the individual and team will grow

Galatians 6:5 for each one should carry his own load.
